Moldova’s Pro-EU Party Achieves Slim Victory
(MENAFN) The pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), currently in power in Moldova, has narrowly clinched a majority in the country's parliamentary elections, based on early figures released by the Central Election Commission (CEC).
This outcome allows PAS to continue its governance without needing to form a coalition.
While support from Moldovans living abroad ultimately tipped the balance in PAS’s favor, the domestic results told a different story. Inside Moldova, the party captured just 44.13% of the votes, drawing its greatest backing from the capital city, Chisinau, where it garnered 52.68%.
At first, the initial tallies implied that PAS might fall short of a solo majority. However, the overseas vote played a decisive role.
The party received overwhelming support from the diaspora, securing more than 85% of votes in certain Western nations.
As the overseas ballots continued to arrive, PAS’s overall percentage climbed and eventually surpassed the 50% mark needed for a majority.
The main challenger, the Patriotic Bloc, earned about 24.3% of the total vote.
Other smaller political groups also made gains: Alternative received 8%, Our Party achieved 6.2%, and the Democracy at Home Party (PPDA) secured 5.6%.
The CEC has not yet confirmed the official final outcomes.
Meanwhile, many voters in regions favoring the opposition faced difficulties. In the separatist territory of Transnistria, which has a population nearing half a million, only 12 polling stations were provided—all of them situated in areas controlled by the central government.
Some of these stations were suddenly moved even farther away on the eve of the election, limiting access for many residents.
